Poetry by Leila Nicar

lost in the move

she speaks no english // smiles only at her husband // loves you like winter sun at 3p.m. on a winter’s day // watches you watching her watching catholic mass on early morning tv while she dips her bread into more-milk-than-coffee

the watch is tick-ticking on the corner of her old dresser // dirty gold // shining dim like hospital rooms after visiting hours end // a tiny metronome that her heart can’t follow anymore
