Hearts of Palm
When I forget what these palms are capable of,
I remind myself of how they can make shake play pray
reach for the sky grasp and let go
mend stretch twist and bend, without breaking.
I remember that I’m a June baby mutable air sign
shapeshifting brown-skinned almond-eyed
island mama daughter of the sun
Whose grandmother gave birth during a typhoon,
Wailing her love songs against the winds,
like a sarswela star.
I retrace the lines, these roots (don’t you forget them) Holding me steady, an anchor during the fiercest storms, A testament that I can bloom and bear fruit, That perseverance is a labor of love.
