Poetry by Leila Nicar

you are

flat cap and cane

gravel voice

backyard garden of eden

green thumb yellow teeth

tomato cheeks on brown skin

sun-dried and wrinkly

lola’s laugh bisaya-thick

eight children

picked mango trees

raised in rice paddies

split-root family

planted in pins on the map

every face on the mantel

wearing the same

flat nose
