Poetry by Megan Griffith

Surviving the Midwest

You are not supposed to be here.

This frosted plain is uninhabitable

for all but the practical

the stoic

the strong.

For a long time,

that knowledge alone withered you,

made you shrink away

and recede into yourself.

But whether or not you were supposed

to be here,

you were.

And you continued to exist

even if you didn’t belong.

Slowly, your roots carved through frozen rock,

your petals embraced frigid wind

and you did not petrify.

You are not stoic.

You are not practical.

You are beautiful and unnecessary

and utterly fragile.

But your roots are deep and you are here.

Blooming.
