Interface

The layman wakes up in the morning

and doesn’t worry about striving

for anything but a coffee.

He collects the newspaper from the porch,

his interface with a world

he’d often prefer to ignore.

But he doesn’t subscribe to study

the headlines; he only wants to find

the word waiting for him

at the center of the crossword,

his mantra for the day.

Andrew Shields lives in Basel, Switzerland. His collection of poems "Thomas Hardy Listens to Louis Armstrong" was published by Eyewear in 2015. His band Human Shields released the album "Somebody's Hometown" in 2015 and the EP "Défense de jouer" in 2016.
