Poem by Venus Davis

Mr. Moon

One night, awaking from a dreamless sleep, I took a look at the night sky

Looking up at the stars and the moon in the blue-black punch of night

It was like praying to a God that you finally believed in

The moon gleamed like the rock on my finger

Bathing in the galaxy of love, I opened my window further to feel the summer heat on my skin

Deeper and deeper, as I peered out, the stars felt like something you should adore

Like a famous painting that you can only see in the most expensive museum

Or an orchestra tuning their instruments before a concert

As I looked at the moon, it looked more like a wise old man

Like a father that you would talk to about your problems or your success

I wanted to feel the bright light of its wisdom

The kindness of it’s heart

The moon is an old man that does not speak

He listens to your words with a piercing gaze but is not angry

Frustrated and grumpy, the moon shows itself

Not full or circular, as if he is going to peer out from behind the crescent shape and tell me to get off of his lawn

You never realize how much of this is yours

How you could run out into your backyard or an open field and just dance along the horizon

The music of a kind silence

When the sky begins to fade into a light purple with drops of pink and red similar to that of a watercolor painting, I know that Mr.Moon is going to leave soon

He begins to travel downward, leaving his place in the sky

I imagine that he is smiling at me and giving me advice for how to help myself

But instead, the moon just disappears like the leaves do in winter

And I am left, staring out of my window with my head in my chin

Looking out at the sunrise and wondering what to do next

I tug at the white dress that drags at my hips

Heavy and uncomfortable

Long and beautiful
