Poem by Hannah Schoettmer

at a catholic elementary school

I watched kids kill bees out of fear—

little rich volleyball kids. their playground had a

wooden gate. A bright, pretty young lady

watched all smiles watched

hot bee guts squish into cracks in the pavement

into grooves in the kid’s shoes. No matter because

no matter how she felt she stood quiet

collecting her paycheck all smiles

and I was quiet too—not my children.
