Poem by Christine Fojas

FREIGHT CARRIER

Wake to rain.

From lying prone

heave against gravity's press.

Hoist flesh up,

center load

on stilts. Ignore creaks

of ligaments on cartilage.

Move

in lumbering sway

to room bathed in harsh glare.

Disrobe. Avoid

surfaces that lie.

You are freight

delivered on groaning wheels,

friction screech on track.

Slumped on seat

eyes darting past

other bodies in bulk.

Heavy rail, murky cloud

iron thoughts

sinking into mud.

This is the long haul.

Tug corners of lips up.

Do it again.
