The Creation Story
When I saw her, it was like the Paschal Mystery
I fell in love that sizzling summer day,
A day I shall remember in my own personal history.
I don’t know what was said and done, but I got her to talk to me
I guess Cupid came out to play.
Whether or not she felt the same way was a mystery.
It was like I got a special delivery
Of a flower with piercing blue eyes— they
Captivated me even in the nighttime as we learned of the history
Of ghosts in Gettysburg – some of bewitchery
My lips kept muttering the card that read “April: bloomed in May”
What made her blossom and sprout was still a mystery.
Do I shower her with coffee or tea?
But then the trip ended and she was on her way
Back home where would still be somewhat close to me, definitely not thinking about me or history.
It wasn’t until that fateful September night at eleven o’clock when I won in victory,
As I watched her blue dress sway
As her strawberry blonde petals bloomed for me – it was no longer a mystery
That she did have feelings for me, as we announced our coupledom publicly
Hand-in-hand, side-by-side, and every Sunday we would pray
For each other, then I would go back to work on my history
Homework and then in a few short months I was off to Germany,
Three months later she told me she loved me, at the time I felt the same,
Then came that July – something about her changed – and my love for her was a mystery.
An entire year had gone by and fast as we celebrated our anniversary,
People could tell we were a weed and flower beginning to fray.
Even I could tell she started to wilt – a month and five days later we were history.
Her petals don’t bloom for me anymore, but she writes poems about me bitterly.
I wish her the best as thoughts of her turn to grey.
I feed her name to God all the time – where and whom she is given to now remains but a mystery.
