Poem by Adaeze I.

electric lady

an ode to janelle monae

Small and full of energy,

her smile can light up

any room she strides across.

She has no qualms about

who she is—

laughing back in the face of

those who have hate

running through their veins

and bigotry pumping their heart.

She is electric—

brimming with a magical buzz

as she proclaims

"even if it makes others uncomfortable,

I will love who I am."

With her music, with her actions,

she has helped me feel okay

with allowing myself to love

her / to love them /

and to not fear the

wicked stares,

double takes,

and disapproving shouts

that try to hold me down.
