Poem by Christine Fojas

walking home after a poetry reading

after Cats Musings poetry reading at New West

past houses like sleeping faces

beside shadowed trees

leaning into earth

light seeping from door cracks

yellow glow of upstairs windows

uphill, downhill, catching the breath

you used to read poems tonight

your nerves still a molten ball

in the pit of your stomach

one brave step after another

you take it slow

on strange roads slick

with remnants of rain

shimmering like stars under your feet

a little bit lost, catch

a glimpse of the passing train

and you sigh with relief

the poetry you heard

the poetry you spoke

still rings in your ears

some nights are feasts

we all partake in

the further you go

the more light you see
