General Submissions

General submissions are open to folks of all backgrounds

Please do not submit your work as a PDF. Please send as either a Word .doc or Google .doc.
 

For creative writing submissions only (such as flash fiction, essays, letters, prose, and or reviews), please submit your work to mariasatsampaguitas@gmail.com. Please address your submissions to Editor-in-Chief, Keana Aguila Labra. Morgan Russell is our Creative Writing Editor. However, they are on hiatus until further notice. Keana uses she/they pronouns. If you wish to use a prefix, please use Mx. or Ms.

Accepted work will be published online on the Marías at Sampaguitas website. Please only submit original work, unpublished elsewhere. Simultaneous submissions are accepted; however, please let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere. Unfortunately, we are unable to pay contributors at this time.

Please label the subject line of your email: GENERAL SUBMISSION - TYPE OF SUBMISSION - NAME 

(EX: GENERAL SUBMISSION - POETRY - FIRST LAST.)

We do not condone plagiarism. If the work is an “after” or response piece, please make it clear in the body of the email.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for a response. 

Please only send one packet per submission period.For example, folks can only send 3 poems at a time. If you send in a packet of 3 poems in July and you are rejected for this packet, you cannot resubmit until our next submission period.

Letters & Prose / Flash Fiction
Please send no more than two pieces. Please do not let word count exceed 1,500 words. Please submit the piece as a Word .doc or Google .doc with the name of the piece as the title of the .doc. Please state how many pieces are attached to the email in the body of the email. Please include a short, third-person bio and any social media handles you wish to provide.

Creative Non-Fiction /
Essays / Reviews

Please send no more than one essay/review at a time. If you are interested in sending multiple reviews, please withhold from submitting the second essay/review until after you’ve received a response regarding the first review. Please do not let word count exceed 1,500 words. Please submit the essay/review as a Word .doc or Google .doc with the name of the review as the title of the .doc. Please include a short, third-person bio and any social media handles you wish to provide. (Reviews may be on the following: novel, poetry, chapbook, poem, short story, song, instrumental, band, singer/songwriter, movie, show, episode, etc. We are open to the possibilities.)
